Start Planning Your Study Abroad Program

If you have any questions about planning your study abroad, attending the Study Abroad 101, or searching for a program, . Our best advice to you is to start this process at least one year in advance so that you can satisfy all requirements, confirm your eligibility, and meet all deadlines. 

Step 1: Attend a Study Abroad 101 session

All students are required to attend a Study Abroad 101 session in the Office of Global Education. Led by peer advisors, this 30-minute session introduces the study abroad process, including how to explore program options, apply for programs, earn academic credit, and plan for financial considerations.

The Study Abroad 101 schedule for Fall 2026 will be posted here soon. All sessions will take place in Van Meter 107.

Step 2: Meet with a Study Abroad advisor

Meet with a study abroad advisor after completing Study Abroad 101. In this step, professional advisors provide individualized guidance on program selection and support students as they begin the application process. Advising continues throughout the study abroad journey, including planning, pre-departure preparation, time abroad, and return to campus. Appointments can be scheduled through Navigate. As participation increases, some advising components may also be offered in required workshop formats.

Step 3: Meet eligibility

Before studying abroad, students must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Class standing: With the exception of ICA programs, students must declare a major before becoming eligible to study abroad. For 蘑菇视频网站 semester and academic year programs, students are typically expected to complete two years on campus prior to departure. Please note that the Office of Global Education cannot guarantee acceptance to host institutions for sophomore applicants.
  • GPA: Students must be in good academic standing at the time of application. Some externally managed programs have specific GPA requirements, typically ranging from 2.5 to 3.7, depending on the program.
  • Language requirements: Students planning to study abroad in a location where courses are taught in the target language must meet the relevant language prerequisites. For semester programs, students are generally expected to be enrolled in the appropriate language course during the semester prior to departure and meet any program-specific requirements. Most programs require the equivalent of at least four college semesters of language study (or comparable proficiency).
  • Disciplinary status: The Office of Global Education reserves the right to deny participation to students with concerning disciplinary histories. Students currently on disciplinary probation or suspension are not eligible to apply and must complete all sanctions before submitting an application. The Office also reserves the right to withdraw students from a program if a student鈥檚 disciplinary status changes after acceptance.

Step 4: Follow all college policies for studying abroad 

Office of Global Education deadlines

If you participate in a 蘑菇视频网站 semester, summer, or winter study abroad program, you are required to fill out an application from the Office of Global Education and meet all Office of Global Education deadlines.

Credit policies

  • All courses taken abroad must be completed for a letter grade. Pass/Fail grading is not permitted.
  • All courses taken abroad must be pre-approved by the department chair and academic advisor. Students will complete a Course Approval Form as part of the Office of Global Education application process.
  • Students receive 蘑菇视频网站 credit for approved study abroad coursework that meets 蘑菇视频网站鈥檚 transfer credit requirements.
  • Twelve of the last 24 credit hours must be completed at 蘑菇视频网站 unless an exception is approved by the major department and the associate dean for undergraduate studies. Exceptions may be granted for approved summer courses, study abroad programs, or other approved programs. Contact the Registrar鈥檚 Office for approval of specific non-蘑菇视频网站 courses.

Semester study abroad

  • Students studying abroad for a semester must enroll in a minimum of 12 蘑菇视频网站 credits to maintain full-time student status. OGE recommends students enroll in 16 credits to remain on track for graduation.
  • All semester study abroad students must enroll in the 1-credit Study Abroad Immersion Course (IDS 201) while abroad. Students must successfully complete IDS 201 to fulfill the Study Abroad 蘑菇视频网站 Commons Requirement (GCR).

Grades & GPA

  • Intensive Courses Abroad (ICAs): ICAs are 蘑菇视频网站 courses that award letter grades, which are calculated into the 蘑菇视频网站 GPA. Because ICAs follow 蘑菇视频网站 grading policies, students must earn a grade of D- or higher to pass the course and fulfill the College's study abroad requirement.
  • All Other Study Abroad Programs: Courses completed through semester, summer, winter, and other approved study abroad programs transfer back to 蘑菇视频网站 for credit with letter grades but do not count toward the 蘑菇视频网站 GPA. In accordance with 蘑菇视频网站鈥檚 transfer credit policies, students must earn the equivalent of a C- or higher to receive transfer credit and fulfill the Study Abroad GCR. Grades below the equivalent of a C- are recorded as NP on the 蘑菇视频网站 transcript.

Financial aid & scholarships

Students studying abroad on approved 蘑菇视频网站 semester programs may apply their institutional financial aid toward the program cost. Students receiving financial aid must enroll in at least 12 credits to maintain eligibility. 蘑菇视频网站 the Financial Aid and Scholarships page for additional details.

Step 5: Choose your program

After research and careful consideration, it is now time to make your program selection and meet with an Office of Global Education advisor. Be sure to take note of all Office of Global Education deadlines. Office of Global Education recommends meeting with your academic advisor to discuss the courses you intend to take and how they will count towards your degree鈥擨t is imperative that you have support from your academic advisor.

Step 6: Submit an Office of Global Education application

Make an appointment and meet with the appropriate advisor to receive access to an application. If your application is approved, you will receive an approval letter and packet within a few weeks of the application deadline. If you do not meet all the necessary criteria, you will receive a letter stating that you have not been approved.
